Question:
What are common mistakes people make if they have been injured in a truck accident?
Answer:
When someone’s been involved in a truck accident, the most common mistake people make is they don’t seek immediate medical treatment. They’re hurting, in pain and disabled, yet they don’t want to be bothered going and seeking medical treatment, whether that means going to a hospital or going to their personal care physician. They’re reluctant and hoping that they get better. They don’t seek the medical treatment that will actually help them get better. That’s then number one mistake people make— not getting immediate medical treatment.
The second mistake is they’re not following through on that treatment. They’ll go to the hospital where the doctor will tell them to follow up with this physician or their own physician, and then they don’t. Then they come to see us six weeks later. We ask them to tell us about their medical treatment, and they say, “Well, I went to the hospital and they told me to follow up with my doctor, but I didn’t.” Those are mistakes that people make— not getting immediate medical treatment and not following up with their doctor.
The third thing is they come to us too late or later than they should. If you come in too late, evidence gets lost, witnesses disappear. You can’t take photographs of the accident scene after the fact when conditions have changed.
These are the things we have to look out for. We tell people to get immediate medical treatment, follow through with that medical treatment, and then we tell them to come see us immediately so we can provide them the assistance that they need.
