Question:
What happens if I was in a car accident and the other driver doesn’t have insurance?
Answer:
If you’re involved in a car accident with a driver of another automobile who doesn’t have insurance, one of the things we look at is whether or not you have your own supplemental uninsured motorist coverage. This is something that you can purchase when you purchase your own automobile liability policy. If you get involved in an accident with somebody who does not have any insurance, or you get involved in an accident with somebody who has very low amounts of insurance, you can still be protected by this coverage.
There is also a provision under New York State law that allows you to file a claim with an agency of New York State, in situations such as hit-and-runs. The best thing to look for is coverage under your own insurance policy, and then, in the worst-case scenario, you could look to this other agency for recovery.
