NY Bus Accident Victim Awarded $72.5 MillionAurora Beauchamp was crossing E. Houston Street at Avenue D in Manhattan, NY when a Metropolitan Transportation Authority (“MTA”) bus struck her, dragged her for approximately 20 feet and then came to a stop on top of her legs. Her pelvis was crushed and the nerves to her leg were severed from the spinal cord leaving her with a paralyzed left leg. At the trial, jurors were shown video of Beauchamp being hit and dragged by bus, photographs of her wounds and video that her relatives recorded during the excruciating five months she spent in the hospital for rehabilitation. After a trial held over three weeks, the jury on February 24, 2024 rendered a $72.5 million verdict against the MTA This is believed to be the largest award ever in a pedestrian knockdown case against the MTA. The jury awarded $25 million for past pain and suffering, $32 million for future pain and suffering, $8.5 million for future medical expenses, and $7 million to Beauchamp’s husband for loss of services.
